Serbian Leader Responds After Croatian Leader Cancels Regional Summit

(MENAFN) Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has fired back at Croatian President Zoran Milanovic after Milanovic canceled an upcoming regional summit, citing what he called hostile rhetoric from Belgrade.

On Monday, Milanovic announced the cancellation of this year’s Brdo-Brijuni meeting, an annual summit of Balkan nations scheduled to take place in Croatia next month. In a statement, Milanovic said “the political statements and actions” of Vucic “disrupt interstate relations, and threaten peace and stability in the Southeast European region,” adding that Vucic’s visit to Croatia “was not possible.”

Responding to the remarks, Vucic told a news agency, “He is absolutely right, I don’t belong there.” He added, “As for the statements and what Zoran Milanovic is referring to, I am not his lackey. Croatia should not feel any danger from Serbia, but they won’t silence us and won’t dictate what we can say.”

Earlier, Vucic criticized the 2025 defense cooperation agreement between Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo, describing it as “a military alliance aimed at attacking Serbia at some point in the future.” He claimed that Serbia’s neighbors were “waiting for a favorable moment when there would be general chaos in the world.”

Milanovic dismissed these allegations as “silly” and rejected the notion that collaboration among Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo could be considered a military alliance.

The tensions trace back to historical conflicts, including NATO’s 1999 bombing campaign in Serbia supporting ethnic Albanian insurgents in Kosovo. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, a status recognized by most Western countries but not by Serbia, Russia, or China.

Relations between Belgrade and the Western-backed government in Kosovo remain strained, with occasional military standoffs and accusations from Serbia of persecution against ethnic Serbs.
